Lone Star Engine Installation

Underexposed
Despite the fact that the engine rides around seemingly protected by a hood made of steel, it rides exposed to the same elements as the underside of your vehicle. All the muck and crud that gets stuck there gets stuck to the engine too.

Whichever year of Mustang you choose for the changeover, if you supply a donor or exchange engine, the salvage yard AEW uses can provide a Cobra engine with a 5-speed T45 transmission for $4,500. That package includes the wire harness, relays, mass-air meter, MFRP (Multi-Function Relay Pack), and accessories such as the alternator, power steering, and A/C compressor. The latter accessory is not needed for race applications, and AEW supplies an idler pulley (called an A/C eliminator) to fill in the vacated item so that the serpentine belt can be fitted. For street cars with air conditioning, custom hoses ($290) are required. In addition, on older cars, Sanchez recommends installing a Hydroboost brake system ($1,000 new or $500 used, lines included) for improved stopping power.

A new exhaust system is also needed as part of the swap, and AEW normally installs long-tube, block-hugger headers and an H-pipe. Note that this swap may not be smog-legal for street use in some states where a visual inspection is required. If the engine swap is on a pre-'73 model, smog equipment is not needed, and '79 to '93 models can be built to pass the smog regs.

Lone Star Auto Engine: As for special oil filters or special disposal techniques for those who change their own oil, that's easy. You can use the same filter and follow the same disposal procedures that you would with conventional oils.

So, should you bite the bullet and fork over more money for synthetics? Sure, if you want to. If you are in a fully committed relationship with the car of your dreams, and have decided that car is worth the cost, spring for that Dom Perignon.

Other factors that affect the selling price of a performance crate engine include the labor that goes into blueprinting and machining the cylinder heads (ccing the combustion chambers, porting, flow testing, etc.), special work done on the block (grinding to increase clearances for a stroker crank, replacing pressed-in oil plugs with threaded plugs), balancing (which includes adding heavy metal on a stroker crank), line boring, milling, stress relieving or other special procedures that would not usually be done to a stock engine. The more time and effort that goes into prepping and building the engine, the higher its price -- and the better its performance and durability (hopefully!).

Many (but not all) performance crate engines are dyno tested after they have been assembled. Dyno testing allows the engine builder to make sure everything was put together correctly and the engine has proper compression and oil pressure. It also allows them to control the critical engine break-in process (which reduces warranty problems). It also allows them to verify the engine's power output. The dyno sheet that comes with the engine shows its actual torque and horsepower curves, which is much more credible than advertising claims in a sales brochure.
